The boxes pictured are a good cross section of the various shapes and sizes of boxes I make. It's also a fine display of the various colours and grains of Tasmanias special species timbers.
I buy my timber in log form and get it milled to my requirements, this is the most cost effective way to source timber and allows me to keep the prices of my boxes to a more affordable level.
After many years of looking and learning I have a good idea of what the sawn timber will look like by studying the outside and cut end of a log. This allows me to source consistently highly coloured and figured timber.
These are made of branches of Huon Pine, I particularly like their rustic look and the handles are copper nails.
Another great use of what is usually just forest waste.
The size of these boxes varies from around 50mm wide, 50mm high and 60-90mm in depth to 150mm x 125mm x 60-90mm.
The size ranges from 100mm wide x 130 high x 65-90mm depth. Species the same as for single drawer boxes.
Sizes are from 130mm x 130mm to 250w x 300h. Depth is 75-90mm.
To reveal the hidden compartment in these boxes you remove the drawer and tilt the box the the left and it will slide down. Sizes are from 200 wide x 120 high to 250w x 160h. all are 75-90mm in depth.
This is a complicated box to make and is made for me by Louke Lawrence, one of the few female woodworkers in Tasmania. To open it you slide the pin on the right hand side up, that allows the lid to slide off either forward or backwards. You are then looking down on 3 small storage compartments. Then lift the piece containing those compartments out of the body of the box. You will see a drawer below the original 3 compartments, tip this section towards you and the drawer will slide out, then tilt to the left and the hidden drawer will slide down in the position of the 1st drawer, then tilt forward as before and it will slide out.

These leaf shaped earrings are made from the prettiest offcuts from the boxes.
Shaped like a molar ( my interpretation anyway!) with a cotton ball in the drawer for the tooth to rest on. Size 65mm wide x 55mm high x 55mm deep.
